ES Explore aquatic biodiversity

The school project VIRTUE is a great way for educators and students to learn about and measure biodiversity of water environments through the accumulation of animals and algae on CD-shaped discs (biofouling).

Why are we doing this?

  • Bring real-life context to the curriculum through a Project-Based Learning approach
  • Sparks curiosity - students are excited to solve problems and ask questions
  • Brings extra creativity into your classroom
  • Models ecological field design and the process of research science
  • Informs students about local and global water quality
  • Promotes teacher collaboration cross-curricularly
  • Fulfills national curricula

How are we doing this?

  • Deploy discs in aquatic ecosystems
  • Analyse biofouling organisms using online educational support
  • Share findings with others through VIRTUE´s Database
